Computer Recycling

I run RecycleMyComputer, an organization that recycles used computers, refurbishes them, and then donates them to people who can't afford a computer.
Everyone on the RecycleMyComputer staff is a volunteer.  Due to our limited staff we are unable to pick up donated computers.  If you wish to donate a Windows computer, drop it off on the 2nd floor of 4805 Edgemoor Lane in Bethesda, Md. 20814.  We are always open on the first Thursday of each month from 10 am - 1 pm, except when that is a federal or state holiday.  If the first Thursday is not convenient for you, please email us to find out when you can drop off your donated computer.

It is difficult to find the office, so please print a copy of the written directions which will help you locate us after you reach our building.  Also see the map at the bottom of this page.  Once you park in the garage, please use this map and follow the directions to reach our office.  Note that there are two entrances in the garage that lead to our building.  Both entrances are shown on the map
If you are donating or picking up a computer, come up to our office at 4805 Edgemoor Lane, and we will loan you a cart, which you can use to transport your computer from your car to our office.
RecycleMyComputer is made possible through the generous sponsorship of
OASIS.  The Bethesda Chevy Chase Regional Services Center generously provides us with space for our operations.
Donations of computer equipment made to RecycleMyComputer are tax deductible.  If you donate computer equipment to us, we will be happy to send you a receipt that you can use for tax purposes.

We accept desktop and laptop Windows computers.  We do not accept Apple computers or laptops.  There is generally a sticker on the front of the computer.  If the sticker says Windows 7 or Windows 8, or Windows 10 we can make use of it.  Computers that don't have one of these stickers on them should be recycled at the County Landfill unless you are confident the computer is less than 6 years old.  We do not accept Windows XP or Vista computers; they should be taken to the County Landfill.  Your donated computer does not have to be in working condition, because we are able to repair them.

We also accept flat screen LCD monitors.  We do not accept the "old style" large CRT-type monitors.  Finally, we accept printers, keyboards, mice, etc.  All of the items in this paragraph must be in working condition.  Please bring the power cord that goes with your computer or printer.  This is especially important for laptop computers and printers.

The first thing we do with computers that are donated to us is erase 100% of the information that is on your computer.  We have to do that in order to reload Windows and other programs, prior to donating your computer to someone who needs it.  If you would prefer to erase the information yourself, you can download this free software program that will accomplish that task.

If you wish to apply to receive a refurbished computer or know someone who needs a refurbished computer, email us to request an application form.  Alternatively, you can download the application form here.  Seniors receive preference for these computers.  There is a $10 or $25 non-refundable administrative fee charged to receive a donated computer.  Recipients will have to pick up their computer at our Edgemoor Lane office.  We do not deliver.
RecycleMyComputer is located on the 2nd floor in the Bethesda Chevy Chase Services Center building at 4805 Edgemoor Lane in Bethesda, Md. 20814.  A map is shown below.  Written directions to reach our building are also available.
