Computer Recycling

I run RecycleMyComputer, an organization that recycles used laptop computers and iPads, refurbishes them, and then donates them to people who can't afford a computer.

Everyone on the RecycleMyComputer staff is a volunteer.  Due to our limited staff we are unable to pick up donated laptops/iPads.  If you wish to donate a Windows laptop or iPad, drop it off on the 2nd floor of 4805 Edgemoor Lane in Bethesda, Md. 20814.   Donations can also be dropped off at Washington Metro Oasis, Monday-Thursday, 10am-4pm.  Click here for directions.  https://washington-metro.oasisnet.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/13/2023/05/Directions-to-Oasis.pdf

While GPS can find our building, it is very difficult to find our office, so please print a copy of the written directions which will help you locate us after you reach our building.  Once you park in the garage,  please follow the written directions to reach our office.  Note that once you are inside the garage, there are two entrances that lead to our building.  Also see the map at the bottom of this page.

We accept iPads and laptop Windows computers.  We do not accept Windows desktop computers nor do we accept Apple computers or Apple laptops.  There is generally a sticker on the laptop.  If the sticker says Windows 7,  Windows 8,  Windows 10, or Windows 11 computer,  we can make use of it.  If there is not a sticker on the computer, but you are confident that it is running Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11,  we can make use of it.  We do not accept Windows XP or Vista computers; they should be taken to the County Landfill.  Your donated laptop does not have to be in working condition, because we are able to repair them.  We are not able to repair broken or damaged laptop screens.  iPads must be in working condition.

The first thing we do with laptops that are donated to us is erase 100% of the information that is on your computer.  We have to do that in order to reload Windows and other programs, prior to donating your computer to someone who needs it.  If you would prefer to erase the information yourself, you can download this free software program that will accomplish that task.

We also fully wipe iPads.  If you prefer to do it yourself, follow these directions:

If you know the password to login to your iPad, follow these directions.

If you don't know the password to login to your iPad, follow these directions.

Donations of computer equipment made to RecycleMyComputer are tax deductible.  If you donate computer equipment to us, and wish a receipt, please request one.  We will be happy to send you a receipt that you can use for tax purposes.

If you wish to apply to receive a refurbished computer or know someone who needs a refurbished computer, email us to request an application form.  Alternatively, you can download the application form here.  Seniors receive preference for these computers.  There is a $10 or $25 non-refundable administrative fee charged to receive a donated computer.  Recipients will have to pick up their computer at our 4805 Edgemoor Lane office.  We do not deliver.

RecycleMyComputer is made possible through the generous sponsorship of OASIS.  The Bethesda Chevy Chase Regional Services Center generously provides us with space for our operations.

RecycleMyComputer is located on the 2nd floor in the Bethesda Chevy Chase Services Center building at 4805 Edgemoor Lane in Bethesda, Md. 20814.  A map is shown below.  Written directions to reach our building are also available.
